Hard-working helpers – without them nothing would happen on the Linz marathon weekend

You can’t just be active at the Linz Donau Marathon by running. This year, many supporting hands will once once more be needed behind the scenes for Upper Austria’s largest running event. When this takes place for the 22nd time on April 6th and 7th, hundreds of volunteers will be on duty.

“A major event of this kind can only work with the support of many hard-working supporters in the background,” says OC boss Günther Weidlinger. This is also confirmed by his long-time employee Julia Grasböck: “There are many activities where we can use helpers.” Whether for filling the starter bags, handing out start numbers or looking following the refreshment stations and relay transition areas, supporters are needed everywhere. They are the ones who ensure everything runs smoothly.

“For me it’s nice if we can contribute a little behind the scenes to the success of the many runners. I also always look forward to seeing the many helpers once more every year. Everyone pitches in and creates something great together,” says long-time volunteer Katharina Gahleitner.

Everyone approaches the task with passion. “The best thing regarding it is that we fully experience the participants’ emotions when they cross the finish line and are totally happy,” says Gahleitner, describing her experiences. “All you can do is have a big grin on your face.” Former long-time OC boss Ewald Tröbinger also shares this experience: “On this marathon weekend you actually only see happy, satisfied people. Even the helpers, who have often been on duty since dawn, have a smile on their faces.”

For all supporters behind the scenes there will be a special thank you celebration following the event.

“10,000” has already been cracked

37 days before the marathon Sunday, the 22nd Oberbank Linz Donau Marathon is already well on track. “We have already surpassed the 10,000 mark in registrations,” said race director Günther Weidlinger happily yesterday, who gave many children a leg up in the “School is running” campaign at the school in Neukirchen am Walde that morning.

The “Generali 5K”, which was introduced this year, is very popular, and the quarter marathon and half marathon are also traditionally well booked. This means that a steady upward trend can be seen following the Corona years. Linz has set itself the goal of 15,000 participants this year. “If we can do that, then the marathon will be a great success once more,” said Franz Gasselsberger from main sponsor Oberbank.
