The University of Geneva will compensate an Italian student to the tune of 145,000 euros. The reason ? She is said to have contracted AIDS in a laboratory at the Swiss establishment, as part of an Erasmus exchange in 2011.
At the time, the young woman had handled HIV samples during research carried out as part of her thesis.
An “identical” virus
Back in Italy, this student from the University of Padua had resumed the normal course of her life. It was only in 2019 that she discovered she was HIV positive, following taking tests to donate blood.
Genetic sequencing made it possible to confirm that the virus contracted by the student at the time was “identical to those which were designed in the laboratory” in Geneva, specifies the Italian press.
145.000 euros
Once the shock had passed, the young woman decided to pursue Swiss university. An amicable agreement was finally reached: the establishment agreed to compensate the patient to the tune of 145,000 euros on the condition that she drops her charges.
“The transaction currently being finalized does not imply recognition of liability or claims from either party,” the University of Geneva insisted.
