Stand-up comedian and Curb Your Enthusiasm co-star Richard Lewis has died at the age of 76. The beloved comedian passed away peacefully in his Los Angeles home on Tuesday night following suffering a heart attack, according to his publicist, Jeff Abraham. Lewis had previously announced his retirement from stand-up comedy in April 2023 following being diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease.
Known for his self-deprecating humor and neurotic style, Richard Lewis rose to prominence in the 1980s. He became a household name when he starred alongside Larry David in the hit HBO show Curb Your Enthusiasm, portraying a semi-fictionalized version of himself. Lewis continued to make appearances on the show, with his most recent one being in Season 12, which is currently airing on HBO. The network expressed its grief over the loss, stating that it was “heartbroken” to hear of Lewis’ passing.
Lewis’ comedic brilliance and unmatched talent made him a beloved figure in the entertainment industry. Larry David, his longtime friend and co-star, paid tribute to Lewis, saying, “Richard and I were born three days apart in the same hospital, and for most of my life, he’s been like a brother to me. He had that rare combination of being the funniest person and also the sweetest. But today he made me sob, and for that, I’ll never forgive him.”
Richard Lewis, born in Brooklyn and raised in New Jersey, made a name for himself in the 1970s performing in clubs in New York City and on late-night TV. His unique style, which often included humorously addressing his own neuroses and hypochondria, resonated with audiences and earned him numerous accolades. Lewis was open regarding his struggles with addiction and depression, but had been sober for decades. He was hailed as one of the top 50 stand-up comedians of all time by Comedy Central and was listed as one of the 20th Century’s Most Influential Humorists by GQ Magazine.
Throughout his career, Lewis appeared in multiple television shows, including the sitcom Anything but Love, where he starred alongside Jamie Lee Curtis from 1989 to 1992. However, it was his role in Curb Your Enthusiasm that truly solidified his place in pop culture. Lewis’ portrayal of himself on the show garnered critical acclaim and won the hearts of millions of viewers.
Lewis had to take a break from starring in Season 11 of Curb Your Enthusiasm due to a series of surgeries. In a statement last year, he shared the news of his Parkinson’s disease diagnosis and the challenges he faced, including four back-to-back surgeries. Despite these setbacks, Lewis remained resilient and continued to entertain audiences with his unparalleled wit and talent.
News of Richard Lewis’ passing has prompted an outpouring of tributes from fellow comedians and celebrities. Jon Stewart, Ringo Starr, and Cheryl Hines, among others, have expressed their condolences and shared fond memories of the late comedian. Jamie Lee Curtis, in an emotional Instagram post, credited Lewis with helping her maintain her sobriety and described him as “deep and so freaking funny.”
Richard Lewis’ legacy in the world of comedy is undeniable. His unique style, genuine relatability, and ability to turn personal struggles into comedic gold set him apart as a true original. As fans mourn his loss, they will always remember the laughter and joy he brought into their lives.
