L’2024 edition of the Paralympic Games will constitute a unique vintage in more than one way.

While Paris and France will host the event for the first time in history in its summer configuration – with an Opening Ceremony planned on Place de la Concorde (8th arrondissement) on the evening of August 28, 2024 – the Games will also benefit from unprecedented international broadcasting in terms of its scale.

Thus, media rights holders from more than 160 countries and territories will be mobilized for the occasion, contributing in fact an increase in overall revenue from the sale of broadcast rights of around 20% compared to the Tokyo 2020 edition. The latter had already been a benchmark in this area, having been broadcast in 154 countries and territories with a cumulative 4.1 billion viewers.

As proof of the interest in the Paris 2024 Games, live coverage of each of the 22 sports on the program will be offered. Never before seen, knowing that Tokyo 2020 provided coverage of 19 sports three years ago, while Rio 2016 provided live broadcast of 15 Paralympic sports.

Obviously, the return to Europe of the Paralympic Games (August 28 to September 8) for the first time since London 2012 – more than a decade – has generated a massive influx of broadcasters eager to obtain media rights .

And France Televisions won the said rights for television broadcast in Franceet Radio France et RMC for radio broadcast, Infront – holders of European rights since 2021 – recently finalized coverage of the Paris 2024 Games in no less than 40 countries.

As John Lisko, IPC Managing Director in charge of media rights, explained:

According to Nielsen, interest in the Paralympic Games has more than doubled over the past eight years, reflected by media rights holders and their increased engagements.

[…] Our goal between now and the opening of the Games is to engage and secure even more media rights holders. We want to give every person on this planet the opportunity to consume and enjoy the Paralympic Games, whether through traditional television, streaming, social platforms, digital content or radio.

For his part, Tony Estanguet, President of the Games Organizing Committee (COJO) welcomed what he considers to be a “fantastic news :

The fact of having reached this sales record six months before the event is further proof of the enormous anticipation aroused by these Games throughout the world.

For Paris 2024, this is also an important step towards our goal of increasing the visibility of sport and Paralympic athletes this summer.

We have set an extraordinary stage, with iconic sites in the heart of the city to elevate the performance of Paralympic athletes and help inspire new audiences in France and around the world.
