Reading of the holy gospel according to Saint Matthew

Mt 20, 17-28

At that time, while on the way to Jerusalem, Jesus called the Twelve aside and said to them: “We are already on the way to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man is going to be handed over to the chief priests and scribes, who will condemn him to death and They will hand him over to the pagans to mock him, scourge him, and crucify him; but on the third day he will rise once more.”

Then the mother of Zebedee’s sons came to Jesus, along with them, and fell down to make a request. He asked her, “What do you want?” She replied: “Grant me that these two sons of mine may sit, one at your right and the other at your left, in your Kingdom.” But Jesus replied: “You do not know what you ask. Can you drink the cup that I am regarding to drink?” They answered: “Yes we can.” And he said to them: “You will drink my cup; but it is not for me to grant it to sit at my right or at my left; it is for whom my Father has reserved it.”

When the other ten disciples heard this, they became indignant once morest the two brothers. But Jesus called them and said to them: “You know that the leaders of the people tyrannize you and that the great ones oppress you. Let it not be like that among you. Whoever wants to be great among you, let him be the one who serves you, and the “Whoever wants to be first, let him be his slave; just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve and to give his life for the redemption of all.”
