This was announced two days ago, and now it has come to fruition: the staff of the Grand Théâtre went on strike today. A picket has been set up since this morning at 7 a.m. on the square in front of the Geneva opera house. The conflict, which is supported by the SSP/VPOD, SIT and Syndicat suisse romand du spectacle unions, concerns the reform of employee status.

Two statuses under the same roof

The revision in question, requested by the supervisory magistrate, Sami Kanaan, envisages harmonizing two distinct regimes in force within the institution. An anomaly which places nearly 200 employees (technicians, machinists, electromechanics, etc.) under the status of City of Geneva staff. The other is governed by the Fondation du Grand Théâtre (FGTG) and concerns in particular artists, members of the choir and ballet. Adopted in November 2022 by the Administrative Council, the reform will allow the FGTG to become the sole employer of the cultural institution. A step endorsed around ten days ago by two committees of the Municipal Council, which expressed positive notice. The Municipal Council is called upon to express itself through a vote next Tuesday or Wednesday.

Staff point out the lack of guarantees regarding the maintenance of current working conditions. He also questions the preservation of the level of retirement pensions or the sustainability of the number of jobs in the short term.

This resounding action partly impacts the performance planned for this evening of “Idomeneus”. Mozart’s opera will be performed in concert version, without stage movements and sets on stage.
