At least five children were injured by fireworks in Kleinbasel early Wednesday evening, according to the Basel public prosecutor’s office. Various vehicles from the Basel-Stadt rescue service and the German Red Cross were called to the scene of the accident shortly following 5 p.m. Two emergency doctors were also on duty.
The police closed off a section of Kleinhüningerstrasse and the Basel transport company set up a diversion for trams. “20 Minutes” first reported on the accident.
Rescue workers from neighboring Germany also rushed to the scene.

According to previous findings, a group of children and young people were handling fireworks in Giesslipark. “It exploded for reasons that are still unclear,” said the public prosecutor. The at least five injured were ten to eleven year old children. The authorities are not saying anything regarding the severity of their injuries. The investigation is ongoing.
Guardians may have taken other affected children and young people to the hospital themselves. These people are asked to contact the youth advocate (061 267 71 11) or the nearest police station. Other witnesses are also asked for relevant information.
