Comments on physical appearance on social networks are obviously sometimes, rarely, good. American star Amy Schumer has revealed that she received a medical diagnosis following remarks regarding her physical changes on social networks, pushing her to consult a doctor.
Victime de “body shaming” following her appearance on Jimmy Fallon’s American show “Tonight Show”, Amy Schumer then understood that something was not normal in her appearance. “There are some medical and hormonal issues going on in my world right now, but I’m doing well,” she said some time following the show aired, on Instagram.
The actress then discovered that she was suffering from exogenous Cushing’s syndrome, caused by high-dose steroid injections. Symptoms of this syndrome include:
a very round and reddened face (“moon face”); rapid and significant weight gain; thin skin with a tendency to bruise easily; back pain during routine activities; pain or bone sensitivity; an accumulation of fat in the shoulders; anxiety, fatigue, headaches.
A reversible pathology in his case
During an interview given to the newsletter News Not Noise (source 1), Amy Schumer said a little more. She indicates that in parallel with the promotion of the 2nd season, entitled Life & Beth, of her Hulu series, she was having MRIs. “In MRI machines for four hours straight, my veins [se fermaient] because of the amount of blood taken and when I thought I might no longer be around to see my son grow up”, she reported. “So finding out that I have the kind of Cushing’s that will get better on its own and that I’m healthy was the best news imaginable.”, she added.
Because Cushing’s syndrome is a reversible pathology, linked to a excess corticosteroids. However, it should not be confused with Cushing’s disease, where the origin of hypercortisolism is due to a benign tumor, an adenoma of the pituitary gland.
Here, the syndrome is said to be exogenous because it is caused by corticosteroid injections, which is why it is reversible. Treating the cause, in this case stopping corticosteroid injections, should help change the situation. If a tumor was involved, surgery, radiotherapy or chemotherapy might be on the agenda.
Note that this syndrome requires rapid treatment, because it can lead to significant complications, particularly at the cardiovascular and metabolic level (type 2 diabetes, hypertension, hypercholesterolemia, etc.).
