Apple has reportedly started working on the design of processors with 2-nanometer lithography, according to information from industry sources shared by the leaker Revegnus. Rumors suggest that these chips will be manufactured by TSMC, further expanding the long-standing partnership between the two companies.

According to screenshots revealed on Tuesday (27), a supposed Apple employee revealed that the manufacturer is already designing your future processors basing in 2 nanometer lithography which, although it is still a technology in development, should begin mass production in mid-2025.

With the change in lithography, there will be a greater density of transistors on chips, leading to a leap in performance and efficiency compared to the current 3 nanometer technology. This advantage should allow big tech to make changes to the architecture of its processors to make the most of its resources.

The alleged employee mentions the terms “TS5nm” and “TS3nm”, which are possible references to TSMC’s 5 and 3 nanometer processes, used to produce chips for the brand’s smartphones and notebooks launched from 2020 onwards. Apple is “working on TS2nm”, which might mean “2 nanometers from TSMC”.

At the moment, the details revealed are just speculation, but it is a fact that Apple has led a technological race to become the first cell phone manufacturer in the world with a 3 nanometer chip. In 2023, the company launched the Apple A17 Pro and Apple M3, both manufactured using a process from TSMC’s “N3” family.

Soon, other chip manufacturers are expected to migrate to the 3 nanometer process, including Qualcomm and MediaTek. The expectation is that the same companies will compete for leadership in the 2 nanometer race — technology that should begin to be mass produced in 2025 by TSMC, Samsung e Intel.

Rumors indicate that Apple will receive the first shipment of 2 nanometer chips from TSMC, repeating the achievements of 3 nanometer technology. With this, the iPhone 17 would be the first cell phone in the world with a 2 nanometer processor. This line of smartphones is expected to be launched in 2025.
