“After several decades: Billa am Stelzhamerplatz will soon be closing,” was the headline of the Innviertler Nachrichten on January 10th. After this week the local food supplier will close. On Saturday it will be open until 4 p.m., then a long era will come to an end.
Yesterday at lunchtime the shelves were still well stocked, only a few products were out of stock. In January, Rewe justified its closure by saying that the branch no longer met the requirements for a contemporary shopping experience.
Second Billa plus for Ried
However, the announcement of the closure did not come as a complete surprise at the time. In Schärding, the branch on the town square was closed around a year ago, and Steyr is also closed. In Ried, the Billa branch on Goethestrasse was closed in March 2023.
The employees of the Stelzhamer branch would remain part of the team, the Rewe Group said in January. Numerous new jobs are being created on Riedauerstraße (former stadium center). A Billa Plus branch will open there on March 28th. We have been working hard on converting the business space for several months. As of March 28th there will be two Billa Plus locations in Ried.
