According to WELT information from security circles, a local patrol car was the first to arrive on site. The request to visit the address came from the LKA Lower Saxony. The arrest by police officers and target investigators from Lower Saxony also triggered a discussion within the authorities regarding the safety of the operation. It is unusual for a wanted terrorist to be arrested by normal police forces and not by special units. Especially since the RAF is considered particularly violent.

Klette belonged to the third generation of terrorists who are said to have been responsible for the bomb attack on the Weiterstadt prison (Hesse). The investigators accuse the trio Ernst-Volker Staub (69), Burkhard Garweg (55) and Daniela Klette of attempted murder and committing serious robberies between 1999 and 2016. According to the security authorities, the crime scenes were in Lower Saxony and North Rhine-Westphalia. The Verden public prosecutor’s office assumes that the accused committed the crimes for the simple reason of getting money.

Lower Saxony’s Justice Minister Kathrin Wahlmann spoke on Tuesday of a “great success in the investigation”. “If the strong suspicion once morest the accused is confirmed, her arrest is not only good news for the victims, but also a clear signal to serious criminals across the country: They cannot feel safe, even years following their crimes, but must always be with them expect consistent prosecution by our authorities,” said Wahlmann. She very much hopes “that this success will also advance the investigations once morest the other accused.”
The President of the State Criminal Police Office (LKA) of Lower Saxony, Friedo de Vries, explained at the press conference that the decisive clue to Klette’s whereregardings came from the population, but not from the most recent ZDF program “Aktenzeichen XY”. The decisive information was received in November 2023. De Vries did not want to give any details. Most recently, on February 14, the public prosecutor’s office requested information regarding the three former terrorists of the Red Army Faction in “file number XY”. 250 tips were received.
RAF terrorist Klette caught – authorities announce details
After more than 30 years of manhunt, former RAF terrorist Daniela Klette (65) was caught in Berlin Kreuzberg. The authorities announced details in a press conference.
Klette did not resist the arrest, said de Vries. When searching the apartment, investigators reportedly found magazines from a weapon and cartridges, among other things. A weapon has not yet been found.
After Klette, investigators also arrested another person in Berlin. It was a man in the “desired age group,” said de Vries. The identity of the arrested man is still being clarified; it is not certain whether his identification document is genuine.
Klette is said to have given private tutoring lessons under a false name
According to a neighbor, Klette is said to have lived under the first name Claudia. In order to earn money, she is said to have given private tutoring in mathematics, said the middle-aged neighbor. It is said that she lived there on the 5th floor for around 20 years. He often talked to Klette, who used a different last name. He received cookies from her for Christmas. But Klette only maintained rather superficial contacts with the neighborhood.
“She always said hello and was actually quite nice,” said a young person from the neighborhood on Tuesday. “I only ever saw her alone with her dog and her bike.” She was a little afraid of the 65-year-old’s big dog. She looks very friendly, with her gray hair tied in a ponytail. Several residents say that Klette was never accompanied.
“No arrest warrant for Klette for terrorism”
Rainer Hofmeyer, former head of counter-terrorism in the BKA and responsible for the investigation following the bomb attack on the Weiterstadt prison in March 1993, in connection with which there was once a search for Klette, congratulates the current investigators on their access. WORLD he said:
“All of the RAF’s crimes are now statute-barred unless they were murder crimes. That’s why there was no longer an arrest warrant once morest Klette from his RAF days. There is certainly solid forensic evidence for the robberies and even more serious crimes that Klette has now been accused of, so that there will be enough prison time, even without the offenses in connection with the RAF having to play a role.

Benjamin Jendro, spokesman for the GdP-Berlin, said: “The arrest of a top terrorist like Daniela Klette shows that the constitutional state is not letting up and, following decades of searching, is doing everything it can to bring to justice those who want to endanger our democratic coexistence The fact that the person being sought was in Kreuzberg is further evidence that “Berlin is still a stronghold for a well-networked nationwide and global left-wing extremist scene.”
Lamya Kaddor, domestic policy spokeswoman for the Green Party, described the arrest as a “great success for the investigative authorities.” The arrest shows that our “investigative authorities are capable of acting and that the removal of alleged criminals from government sanctions in the underground, even following decades, will not be tolerated.” This applies to “all forms of terrorism and organized crime”. Our democracy continues to prove itself to be defensible and proves that “we are not blind in any eye!”
Arrest warrant issued and search warrant issued
Klette is now in custody. According to the LKA, she was flown by helicopter to Bremen on Tuesday and from there taken to the Verden district court. A judge issued the arrest warrants once morest the 65-year-old. At the request of the Verden public prosecutor, a search warrant was also issued for the apartment.
Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser (SPD) also sees the arrest of the former RAF terrorist as an important signal to the victims of the Red Army Faction’s actions. “This successful search is the result of decades of tireless investigative work. The constitutional state has shown its persistence and staying power. Nobody should feel safe underground,” Faeser was quoted as saying in a statement from her ministry.
