The Fight Between Matt Rempe and Mathieu Olivier: A Close Look at the Aftermath

The fight between Matt Rempe and Mathieu Olivier left marks on the face of the New York Rangers giant.

Two days following being beaten by the Quebec forward of the Columbus Blue Jackets, Rempe showed up for training with a swollen eye on Tuesday.

A large bruise was clearly visible, as shown in this photo taken by ESPN reporter Greg Wyshynski:

Rempe has been a sensation since his NHL debut on February 18, having already been involved in three solid battles in his first five games. Before facing Olivier, he came to blows with Matt Martin, of the New York Islanders, in his first meeting, and with Nicolas Deslauriers, of the Philadelphia Flyers, last Saturday.

Rempe might well take his revenge on Olivier on Wednesday, since the Islanders and the Blue Jackets will face each other once more. You will also be able to watch this clash on TVA Sports from 7 p.m.

It’s no surprise, however, that Rempe is still banged up, having been hit hard several times by Olivier. The officials even refused to let him go to the penalty box, instead sending him directly to the locker room, as he appeared so dazed.

The young 21-year-old from Alberta may have a very imposing size (6 ft 7 in and 241 lbs), but he will have to learn to better protect himself when he drops the gloves. An expert on the subject, former strongman John Scott, gave him some advice to follow in his podcast “Dropping the Gloves”.

“When you’re 6’7”, you have to grab your opponent by the neck so he can’t breathe and it’s uncomfortable for him. That’s what I would try to do,” Scott suggested to Rempe.
