One in four respondents would rather not deal with news regarding the climate crisis; when it comes to domestic politics, the figure is one in five.

News regarding Corona (58 percent), celebrities (37 percent) and war (35 percent) are particularly often avoided or completely avoided in this country. This is the result of an online survey conducted by the market and opinion research institute Marketagent among 1,000 respondents that is representative of the Austrian population. One in four respondents would rather not deal with news regarding the climate crisis; when it comes to domestic politics, the figure is one in five.

The reason given for refusing to cover these topics, especially when it comes to celebrity news, is that it is simply not of interest (63 percent). Many people don’t want to hear anything regarding Corona anymore (28 percent), doubt its truth (26 percent) or complain that it’s always the same thing (26 percent). When it comes to war, what is crucial for many objectors is that it triggers negative emotions (32 percent). 29 percent cite distrust in the truth. When it comes to domestic policy reporting, around a third of those surveyed who avoid it completely or rather avoid it say that they have no interest in it. A quarter are bored by it and 24 percent have no trust in the truth.

In general, 82 percent of survey participants believe they are interested in current events. 44 percent of those surveyed can be classified as “news pragmatists” who inform themselves regarding the essentials but avoid details. Approximately 20 percent identify themselves as “news fanatics,” while 16 percent even classify themselves as “news junkies” who always try to stay up to date. 15 percent are “news grouches” who would like to find out more but cannot bring themselves to do so. Around 6 percent of those surveyed describe themselves as “news refusers”.

The analysis of the survey data showed that participation in current news events increases with age. Six out of ten baby boomers (born 1946 to 1964) get information several times a day. For people from GenZ (1994 to 2010) it is only 17 percent. The survey was conducted at the end of June/beginning of July 2023. 14 to 75 year olds took part.
