Smoking for a long time is more dangerous than smoking a lot in a short time.

TRUE. Smoking one cigarette per day for twenty-seven years (approximately 10,000 cigarettes) increases the risk of cancer and heart attack more than smoking one pack per day for sixteen months (also 10,000 cigarettes).

It is nicotine that is harmful to health.

Faux. It is the 4000 substances contained in smoke, including carbon monoxide, carcinogens and bronchial irritants, which are toxic. Nicotine is addictive, and the more you swallow, the more dependent you are.

In any case, it protects smokers from covid.

Bof. If, at the start of the epidemic, some studies suggested that smokers were less often infected than others, these results have not been confirmed. Above all, tobacco increases the risk of developing a severe form and dying from the disease (+40%) (2).

The first cigarette of the day is the most “toxic”.

It depends. The more we are addicted, the harder we pull on this cigarette in order to get our dose of nicotine. We then swallow more smoke, more deeply, which is actually more harmful. But it’s the same thing with the cigarette following leaving the train, the plane, a meeting…

Doing sport clears the lungs of tobacco.

Faux. Nothing can remove the tar that settles on the bronchi, even if regular physical activity limits (without counteracting) the damage caused by tobacco to the lungs and the heart. In any case, it is better to avoid smoking in the hour following the session to protect your heart.

Better to smoke light or rolls.

Faux. These are neither more natural nor less toxic than the others and rolling tobacco, more loaded with nicotine, even makes you more addictive.
