The Homeric hero Odysseus took 10 years to return from Troy to his kingdom in Ithaca. It took NASA more than 50 years to send its own “Odysseus” to the Moon. The eponymous spacecraft became the first to be launched from American soil, and managed to find itself on the surface of the Moon, following 1972. The modern Ulysses emitted a signal, which happened for the first time following the successful mission of “Apollo 17”. , on the Moon, which had lasted 12 days, 13 hours, 51 minutes and 59 seconds.
The NASA leaders and team members who implemented the program have every reason to feel vindicated.
“Today, for the first time in more than half a century, the United States is returning to the moon. Today, for the first time in human history, a commercial company, an American company launched and led the journey up there. And today, is the day that demonstrates the strength and promise of NASA’s commercial partners. Congratulations to everyone involved in this big and bold project from Intuitive Machines and Space X and here at NASA. What a triumph! Odysseus reached the moon. This step is a huge step forward for all of humanity,” said Bill Nelson, head of NASA.
At the mission control center in Houston, the pressure was on as controllers anxiously awaited the craft’s signal, which finally responded 10 minutes later.
The craft circled the moon in orbit before descending toward the cratered lunar surface in search of a smooth landing spot.
The Odysseus mission is designed to assess the lunar environment of the Moon’s south pole ahead of NASA’s current plan to enable a crewed mission there in late 2026.
