Owners of the Apple Vision Pro report a strange crack in the glass

A growing number of owners of the brand new Vision Pro from Californian manufacturer Apple are posting almost identical reports of a crack on the front glass of their AR glasses. Not only is the crack the same for everyone. What’s also identical is that none of them seem to know how it happened.

Sudden crack angers Vision Pro owner

The problem was first raised by colleagues at the publications Apple Insider and Mac Rumors discovered. The colleagues at Engadget also found the Vision Pro to be broken for apparently no reason. Various Reddit users have also reported regarding it in the r/Visionpro subreddit.

All the pictures posted online show vertical hairline cracks in exactly the same area above the bridge of the nose. The affected Reddit users claim that they do not know what might have caused the crack.

In any case, they neither dropped the device nor stored it improperly. Reddit user @dornbirn claims he polished the front glass, put the soft cover on, put the device in his bag and discovered the crack the next morning. Most of the other affected Reddit users also want their Vision Pro devices either stored in cases or at least in soft covers.

Crack in the headset: That might be the problem

Speculation suggests it might be a thermal issue that occurs when the Vision Pro is charging in the case or with the cover on. Others suspect a manufacturing problem with the glass.

Still others can imagine a design flaw. After that, the glass would be stretched too hard and would eventually crack at the predetermined breaking point. It remains unclear at first whether the problem will have an impact. Although the hairline crack occurs above a sensor, it does not hinder any of the cameras.

Apple shrugs

Apple has so far taken the position that it has nothing to do with the problem. After that it is a paid repair. Anyone who has booked Apple Care for an impressive $500 pays the deductible of $299. Without Apple Care, the repair costs $799.

It is still unclear how widespread the problem actually is. If it turns out that this is a less rare phenomenon, Apple’s stance on the subject is likely to change once more.
