Months of efforts to secure his release were successful

Vienna/Doha (OTS) – We are pleased to announce that the 84-year-old Austrian citizen Herbert Fritz, who has been imprisoned in Afghanistan since May 2023, is free as of today. He was already able to leave Afghanistan and landed in Doha, Qatar, in the followingnoon. If necessary, he will receive medical care there before he takes the flight home to Austria.

Through the Foreign Ministry in Vienna, the Austrian embassy in Pakistan responsible for Afghanistan and the EU representation in Kabul, we have provided Mr Fritz with all our consular support over the last nine months and were able, for example, to ensure that urgently needed medication and a hearing aid were given to him .

Together with the Federal Chancellery and our international partners, we have persistently campaigned for his release since May 2023. We would particularly like to thank our partners in Qatar and the EU representation in Kabul for their discreet and trusting cooperation, which ultimately led to Mr Fritz being able to return to Austria.
