The country announced in a press release on Wednesday that the “orange” warning level applies, the second highest on the four-level scale. A cold front moving across the country from the west is responsible. Intense snowfall with up to half a meter of fresh snow was expected. It was said that the Lienz district and the upper Wipptal were mainly affected.
“Due to the amount of new snow, there is an increased risk of accidents on snowy roads. In addition, branches can break due to the wet, heavy snow,” warned Elmar Rizzoli, head of the Tyrolean Center for Crisis and Disaster Management, and called for increased attention in forests, parks and avenues. An increase in the avalanche danger to warning level 3 – i.e. significant danger – is also to be expected.
Rainfall is also expected in Upper Austria on Friday. At higher altitudes and in the mountains it is likely to be white: according to the forecast, snow will fall above 700 or 800 meters. Up to 30 centimeters of fresh snow is possible on the Dachstein and 17 centimeters on the Höss.
