Crisis in Guatemalan soccer
Cobán Imperial shows threats with machetes on the Malacateco field
Cobán Imperial experienced a painful defeat by falling 3-0, this Friday, once morest Malacateco at the Santa Lucía Stadium, Malacatán, San Marcos, thus losing its undefeated record. However, beyond the sporting result, attention is focused on an alarming incident that has generated a crisis in Guatemalan soccer.

In this regard, this Saturday, the Alta Verapaz institution issued a damning statement, pointing out that fans supposedly aligned with Malacateco threatened the coaching staff and players of Cobán Imperial during the match.
In the statement, the scene is described as a group of people with “support clothing towards Malacateco” who carried edged weapons, including machetes, putting the integrity of the players and coaching staff of Los Príncipes Azules at risk.
In a tone of concern, Cobán Imperial also denounced the lack of security at the stadium, alleging that minimum security measures were not met during the match. In addition, they accused the local directors of Malacateco of being passive witnesses to the violent events, without taking measures to stop the situation.
“During these actions of violence, Deportivo Malacateco managers were present, who did not take any relevant action to stop the events,” the statement said, urging the authorities to intervene and address the problem decisively.
It is important to highlight that, according to Cobán Imperial’s version, these acts of violence were perpetrated by “a small group of fans” and do not reflect the attitude of all the Malacateco fans. This nuance seeks to avoid unfair generalizations and maintain perspective on the situation.
The seriousness of the complaint is supported by a video spread on social networks, which shows part of what happened during the match. This audiovisual material is now in the hands of the Disciplinary Body of the National League, which must analyze it to issue a resolution on the case.
Despite this unfortunate situation, The Blue Princes maintain their lead in the tournament with 14 points, although the stain of this incident remains as a bitter reminder in a season that promised to be simply sporting.
