We know it. The last few years haven’t been the best when it comes to energy prices. Roger and his wife experienced this once more recently.
The two residents of Molenweideplein, where they live in a comfortable apartment, mightn’t believe it when they received their energy bill. Especially since the couple did everything to benefit from an advantageous rate. Indeed, like the 80 residents of their building, the couple benefits from storage heating.
A system where the heating accumulates heat during the night to release it during the day. So you can benefit from a very advantageous nightly rate. But the problems seem to have started when they replaced their analog meter. “Flvius came to replace it with a digital meter, even though the installer had warned me that I would pay more as a result,” Roger explains to Belang van Limburg.
“Half of my pension”
“I thought we would have to pay a little more, but the 2023 electricity bill that just arrived in the mailbox is dizzying,” sighs Roger. In total, he must pay no less than 8,972 euros for consumption of more than 10,000 kWh. “It’s half my pension. No one in the neighborhood pays as much as we do. »
However, the Flemish daily investigates it and Fluvius affirms for its part that the digital meter has nothing to do with it. “We have examined their consumption and there are no irregularities,” explains spokesperson David Callens. “Its net billed rates have even decreased since installation. Roger actually uses the storage to heat himself, but he wrongly thought he was getting an exclusive rate for the night. This has never been the case. The cause of the high bill lies in the contract with its supplier (Luminus, editor’s note). Its current prices are higher than the market average.”
“Notify us in time”
Indeed, Roger signed a permanent contract with Luminus for quite some time. The latter was automatically renewed in November 2022, in the heart of the energy crisis. Result ? The native of Lanaken found himself paying 70 cents per kWh. In 2023, the contract was renewed once more with a significantly lower price.
Roger should no longer worry regarding his next bill, although he still has a bitter taste in his mouth. “I maintain that Luminus might have done more to warn us in time of such a high bill,” he concludes. “For the first four months we paid an advance of 508 euros, but as we found it very high, we called Luminus once. They then reduced it to 350 euros. The employee assured us that we would be fine with that as well, but in retrospect we were misled. »
