Written by Samah Labib Sunday, February 25, 2024 12:00 AM Posted by Malco Vision Pro Reports of a crack appearing on the windshield of their headphones, and none of them seem to know how that happened either.
This issue was first discovered by MacRumors, and so far there have been five separate Redditors who have posted regarding it in the r/VisionPro subreddit.
Engadget also reported that the same thing happened with its review unit, and what’s curious is that all the photos uploaded show vertical hairline cracks in the same exact area above the bridge of the nose.
All of the affected Redditors say they didn’t do anything obvious to cause the cracks, like dropping the device or storing it incorrectly. Reddit user dornbirn claims they polished the windshield, put the soft cover on it, put it in the case, and woke up to see the crack the next morning. Most of the affected Redditors also noted that they either stored their Vision Pros in cases or put the soft cover on them.
There is some speculation that this may be a heating issue when charging the Vision Pro in the case or with the cover, others believe that it may be a problem with the glass manufacturing or just a design flaw that puts a lot of stress on that particular area.
It’s also unclear if the hairline crack is just a cosmetic issue, as it appears to appear above a sensor but isn’t in the way of any of the cameras. However, repairing the Vision Pro is expensive with Apple Care costing $500 for the Vision Pro and there’s a discount of $299 for damaging the cover glass, without it it would cost $799. @ContributionFar8997 wrote that they visited the Apple Store and were told they would have to pay the deductible in order to fix the breakage.
We don’t know yet how widespread this issue is, as reports seem to be limited to Reddit so far. The Verge reached out to Apple to see if it was aware of the issue but did not immediately receive a response.
