Controversy Over CEO Salary at Stellantis Sparks Outrage Among Workers in France

In France, following the latest salary increases provided by private sector employers, the median salary increased from 2,012 euros in 2021 to 2,100, or even 2,150 euros in 2023. However, senior executives earn much more than this salary. This is the case of the CEO of the car manufacturer Stellantis who earns 100,000 euros per day.

This salary is controversial in France, particularly among the manufacturer’s staff. Indeed, Stellantis revealed, on Friday February 23, that its CEO, Carlos Tavares, should earn up to 36.5 million euros for the year 2023. Revenues which have more than doubled in one year, reaching a 56% increase.

In detail, Carlos Tavares won a bonus of 10 million euros for the transformation of the group. He is thus rewarded for having launched the production of electric motors and gearboxes for hybrid cars in Moselle, following the increase in sales of electric cars in 2022.

A salary that shocks Stellantis workers

However, this salary does not pass to the group’s employees. “ It’s unfair, it’s shocking, scandalous what Tavares is going to get! », denounces the CGT representative at the Sochaux factory in Doubs, Jérôme Boussard. “ When we know that a dubbing worker (day/night) earns around 1400 euros “, this salary is shocking, adds the elected official.

It must be said that the decision taken by the group to redistribute nearly 1.9 billion euros to its employees around the world does not overshadow the CEO’s salary. This redistribution will affect employees in France and represents a minimum bonus of 4,100 euros for the lowest salaries.

« But compared to last year, it is 200 euros less. There is no prospect of an increase in wages Stellar. This bonus of 4000 euros, in addition, if we are sick, if we have the flu, we lose money », deplores Mr. Boussard for whom the remuneration system is unfair.

« Tavares continues his momentum. He is not changing his mind. This is a global policy of the group, employees in France do not weigh much », Regrets, for his part, Benoit Vernier, elected CFDT. Note that the salary of this CEO will have to be submitted to the vote of the group’s shareholders at their general meeting on April 16.

However, workers have no illusions, this salary will surely be voted on. However, it should be noted that Carlos Tavares’ fixed salary is two million euros. For the year 2023, the exceptional bonus for the general manager has exploded the difference with the average salary in the group, which is 70,404 euros per year. Carlos Tavares would therefore receive 518 times the average salary of his employees
