Three Cuban athletes members of the wrestling teams left the island’s delegation in the last hours.
The athletes were concentrated in Acapulco, Mexico, to participate in the Pan American Championship of the Greco-Roman and freestyle modalities. Then, they would compete in a contest that will award tickets to the Paris Olympic Games.
The protagonists of the escapes are Susana Martínez (76 kg); Santiago Hernández (57 kg) and Osmany Diversent (57 kg). This was reported on his social networks by Roly Dámaso, a figure close to that sport on the Island.
Santiago, for example, did not wait for his luggage upon arrival at the Mexican airport. He decided to disappear and get away from the Cuban delegation as soon as possible. The trainer Daniel Gómez, based on Aztec soil, also shared the information on his social networks.
“With this abandonment of the Cuban delegation, wrestling was left without a representative in the 57 kg division. Now we have to wait another cycle to qualify this division for the Olympic Games,” said the coach regarding the case of Osmany Diversent.
Talent drain
One of those who abandoned, Susana Martínez, made the trip to Mexico to support the training of several Cuban athletes. These are the cases of Yusneylis Guzmán (in the 50 kg category), Laura Herin (53 kg), Ángela Álvarez (57 kg), María Santana (62 kg) and Brenda Sterling (68 kg).
Meanwhile, Guantanamo-born Santiago Hernández, a wrestling athlete, has as his main result a bronze medal in the 2023 Pan American Championships, in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
Hernández took the gold medal at the Junior Pan American Games in Cali-Valle, Colombia, in December 2021. Meanwhile, in 2023 he was champion at the Central American and Caribbean Games in San Salvador.
In bronze he finished his last climb to the podium before escaping. The result was at the Pan American Games in Santiago, Chile, at the end of 2023.
