LAKE CHARLES—McNeese softball picked up a 8-0 run-rule win over Niagara and a 3-0 win over North Dakota Friday on the opening day of the Cowgirl Classic II, improving to 9-4 on the season.
The tournament will conclude with two more games Saturday beginning with an 11 a.m. game between Niagara and North Dakota. McNeese will play Niagara at 1:30 p.m. in the final game of the tournament.
McNeese opened its scoring once morest Niagara with three runs off four hits and took advantage of two errors in the second inning for the early lead. The Cowgirls blew the game open with five runs on five hits in the fourth to extend its lead to 8-0.
The Cowgirls picked up 10 hits in the game with Samantha Mundine, Alexis Dibbley, Rylie Bouvier, and Mariana Torres all collecting two hits apiece. Torres and Chloe Gomez all had one extra base hit with Torres hitting a triple and Gomez with a double. Mundine who also started the game in the circle for McNeese, led the Cowgirls with three RBI in the game. She also tossed 3.0 innings, giving up three hits with two strikeouts and two walks. Ryann Schexnayder tossed the final two innings and picked up the win to improve to 4-2 on the year. Schexnayder allowed one hit with two walks and one strikeout.
In the nightcap once morest North Dakota, a sacrifice fly by Dibbley in the first inning scored Crislyne Moreno from third for the 1-0 lead.
Torres took advantage of a three-base fielding error then scored the second Cowgirl run on a Delaney Dunham fielder’s choice. The third run came off the bat of Emily Phillips who scored Dibbley following she led the inning off with a triple to right field.
McNeese picked up six hits in the game with Moreno and Phillips leading the way with two hits apiece.
Lindsay Davis picked up the complete game shutout, allowing three hits, five strikeouts without allowing a walk.
