Call for comments on the changes to the Animal Welfare Act – ÖVP and ÖKV are playing the wrong game at the expense of responsible animal owners

Vienna (OTS) – “A Green minister is introducing a change in the law at the request of lobbyists, which has no technical or factual basis, and the ÖVP is also actively supporting it. Contrary to Rauch’s announcement, the draft amendment to the Animal Protection Act has only recently been reviewed, but that does not mean that the criticism from responsible animal owners is becoming quieter – on the contrary. But the greater madness will still come to us if this amendment is passed as it is, because it is packed with powers to issue regulations – in other words: as soon as the law is passed, the green animal protection minister Rauch can single-handedly order everything that his lobbyist friends tell him say,” said FPÖ General Secretary NAbg. Michael Schnedlitz today. “We have been receiving countless emails for weeks, criticizing our criticism of the way in which the amendment was made, but above all of the planned changes. This is also reflected in the statements already made by numerous Austrians and since the assessment runs until March 18th, numerous further statements can certainly be expected,” he referred to the parliamentary website (https://www.parlament.gv.at/gegenstand/XXVII/ME/315?selectedStage=100), where an official position on the planned changes can also be taken.

“Better to have a dirty but honest paw than a clean but lying hand” – that is a fitting quote for the “false game that the ÖVP and the ÖKV are playing,” said Schnedlitz. Because in their answers to complaints, both would blame this “messed-up amendment” solely on the Greens: “On the one hand, we have a Green minister who prefers to consult with lobbyists instead of those affected, and on the other hand, we have an ÖVP who acts like this as if this unrealistic amendment to the animal protection law had only grown on the ‘crap’ of smoke. The ÖVP itself confirms this in its responses from the ÖVP animal welfare spokesman to the complaints of countless animal owners who are angry regarding the planned changes. However, the ÖVP forgets to mention that the decision to change is still made unanimously in the Council of Ministers, i.e. also with the votes of the ÖVP.” Also the Austrian Canine Association (ÖKV) as the umbrella organization of over a hundred Austrian dog clubs that deal with breeding , keeping, raising, exhibiting, training and testing the dog, would only reconfirm itself as a preliminary organization of the ÖVP, as it remained inactive for months, but now – like the ÖVP – is fully behind all the planned nonsense in this amendment. Schnedlitz continued: “As an umbrella organization and interest group, you should represent the interests of your members, right? The ÖKV does exactly the opposite and turns out to be primarily a mouthpiece and representative of ÖVP interests. ÖVP and ÖKV are playing a false game to the detriment of members and responsible dog owners, dog athletes and dog breeders in Austria!”

In addition to the Austrians’ statements, the FPÖ will also prepare a comprehensive statement and will consider all the means available to the FPÖ, such as an expert hearing, said Schnedlitz: “After the green animal protection minister Rauch – like his government colleagues from the ÖVP – none If technical experts and only non-interest groups are involved in the creation of a law, we as the FPÖ will take all the means at our disposal to bring the animal protection minister and Nehammer & Co to reason. With an FPÖ in a federal government, there would be no such unfair practices and such confusing changes to the law. This is the only way to achieve effective and realistic measures for greater animal welfare and protection.”
