He informed the club’s current board of directors of this yesterday.
In addition to Luger, the Wels FPÖ mayor Andreas Rabl and the third state parliament president Peter Binder (SP) were also represented on the list.
There was particularly strong resistance to Rabl’s nomination for the Holocaust Memorial Association, including from the Austrian Mauthausen Committee and the Israelite Cultural Community. Most recently, the Israeli memorial Yad Vashem itself called for the election of the memorial association’s board to be suspended.
In addition to the above-mentioned list of politicians, a list of private individuals is also running for the board of the “Friends of Yad Vashem” association. According to Luger, this is also the reason why his list of politicians is withdrawing their candidacy. “Our intention was always to secure the continued existence of the association, which was still at risk at the end of January, by linking democratically legitimized public officials with board positions,” Luger explained in a statement yesterday. “This no longer seems necessary, which is why we can withdraw our offer,” said Luger. “The team around Mayors Luger and Rabl” wishes the club all the best.
