Lekha is a joker and joker. He is the most humorous guy in our department. Lekha is actually already over thirty, but he behaves like a kid!
Listening to Alexey, you might think that accounting is a very fun activity. We serve entrepreneurs and small organizations. Our comedian never let a single client go without a joke.
He never joked in a mean way. His phrases always made me want to smile, or even laugh until my stomach hurts.
One day we decided to get together following a corporate party and go to a stand-up comedy show. The evening was wonderful, but we all agreed that the artists were far from being our Alexey. The stand-up comedians actively communicated with the audience, and Lech bravely countered the comedians.
At the end of the evening, the administrator of the establishment approached us. He said there would be a discount on our bill. This is a compliment from the establishment.
– You impressed us! Our audience hasn’t laughed so much for a long time. And you yourself understand that we hear witty speeches regularly! – said the administrator, turning to Lekha.
– I’m flattered! – answered Lekha and, like a good soldier, stood at attention. The employee of the establishment laughed.
– I suggest you not to waste your talent for free. Come see us tomorrow evening. Try speaking in front of a crowd! If the performance is successful, you will receive a fee,” the administrator suggested.
Lech waved his hands, trying to refuse. But it was not there. I answered for my friend that he agreed and that he would definitely come tomorrow with cool jokes!
When we left the establishment, Lekha almost killed me with his gaze. He came at me hard, but even that turned out funny. Colleagues immediately shushed him so that he wouldn’t “waste his talent!”
In the morning, Alexey reported to us, saying that the material for the performance was ready. He was a little worried, but this did not stop him from sparkling with wit more than usual. The entire department went to support my friend.
We didn’t regret coming to Lekha’s performance one bit! He was incomparable. The audience lit him up, our comedian quickly relaxed and got a taste for it.
The applause was his reward, and following the speech the administrator shook Lekha’s hand and handed him an envelope.
-Our club has an offer for you. You wouldn’t want to perform full-time. We will conclude an agreement for evening stand-up three times a week. There will be a good fee!
“I’ll think regarding it,” Lech answered with a smile. He happily clutched the envelope. He has a family, a pregnant wife, two preschool children. The envelope with the money came in very handy!
And he thought. We were so glad that everything worked out for Alexey. He managed to both work and write material. Sometimes it turned out that, following making a joke in a group, he immediately wrote down a funny phrase in a notebook.
Money poured in like a river. Lekha began to be invited to other clubs. I had to write more and more.
Once Alexey complained that following telling a joke on stage once, it loses its value. Some numbers might be repeated, but with less success. They paid less for such performances. Our guy just worked his ass off.
Over time, we began to notice that Lekha was more often silent at work. If he wasn’t focused on reporting, he was writing material. If he was distracted, he became irritated. And before, he responded to any phrase addressed to him with a bomb joke.
Alexey used less and less humor at work. He “carried” all his wit to the clubs. One fine day he wrote a letter of resignation. Working as an accountant took up too much of his time. And I needed to write more and more.
Our entire team, of course, was upset, but we wished our beloved Lekha happiness and creative success. I asked when he was going to get paid for leaving work.
“There won’t be any trouble,” Alexei muttered, showing with his appearance that the conversation was over.
From that moment on, Lech devoted his entire life to humor. But he looked gloomy and dissatisfied. His wife came to get a certificate from her place of work. She complained that her husband had changed a lot: he lost weight, became nervous, silent and angry.
One day, my friends and I ran into a club to watch Alexey’s performance. What I saw disappointed me. This was no longer the same guy with light humor. The jokes were angry and forced.
And a year later I accidentally met Lesha on the street. It was impossible to recognize him. He had grown an unkempt beard and smelled of cheap alcohol.
It turned out that wild success was followed by rapid burnout. The former comedian admitted that he simply began to run out of jokes. He began to “pick up” randomly dropped witty phrases from friends and family.
Alexey was no longer invited to the stage. The money ran out, and the wife and three children already went to live with their parents. We quickly talked with Lekha, and I hurried home.
All evening I thought regarding that cheerful guy who made our everyday life a holiday. My first instinct was to tell my colleagues what I had learned. But still I didn’t. Let Lech always remain in the memory of his friends as that witty guy who, with a couple of phrases, might light up smiles on our faces.
