The need for Western countries to support Ukraine leads to a split within Europe. Some countries, such as France and Germany, believe that they need to focus on their own security. In turn, Eastern Europe is dissatisfied with the fact that the European Union as a whole does not fulfill its obligations to support Ukraine, as it is afraid of Russia. Bloomberg reports this, highlighting the internal disputes of the EU countries.
“The dispute over how to replenish Ukraine’s critically low stock of artillery shells and where these stocks should be purchased is provoking a deep divide. Eastern Europe accuses the West of failing to listen. Officials note that the West as a whole does not understand the urgency with which it is necessary to supply weapons to Ukraine,” transmit Bloomberg journalists, citing statements by European officials.
One of the Czech officials emphasized that if Europe does not increase arms supplies to Kyiv and it becomes clear that Russia is winning, their country will think regarding not purchasing weapons from the same France and Great Britain, which oppose aid to Ukraine. Europe also began to express dissatisfaction with NATO’s actions in general. Some officials, such as Latvian Foreign Ministry spokesman Gabrielius Landsbergis, note that Europe has the opportunity to redirect all its production to support Ukraine, but is not doing so. He proposed purchasing weapons outside the European bloc if it is not possible to produce them independently.
American journalists have already noted that in 2024 the West may begin push Kyiv to negotiations with Russia, as he does not intend to increase support for Ukraine. In addition, in March 2025, the temporary protection that the European Union provided to Ukrainian refugees expires. The British newspaper the Economist wrote that the governments of European countries specifically reduce the amount of preferential support for refugeesto force them to return to their homeland.
