If the existence of host families for children and adolescents is now well established, the system intended to take care of seniors is much less known. However, in Vienne, nearly 170 families live daily with the elderly people who have been entrusted to them. Supervised by the Department, family reception is intended to offer a warm, more intimate and less expensive environment than a retirement home with an average cost of €800 and the possibility of claiming the personalized autonomy allowance. To be able to benefit from this system, people welcomed must be over 60 years old and not be related to the host. The latter must have obtained approval from the Department, which authorizes them to care for up to three elderly and/or disabled people. In Buxerolles, Carol obtained her approval for elderly and disabled people in 2015. In her house, which accommodated up to three residents, she had to make some adjustments, at her own expense. “Each person must have their own room with their own furniture and be able to use common areas. For convenience, I also had to install a ramp as many have difficulty moving around. A person from the Departmental Council then came to validate the accommodation and check that everything was compliant. » Similar names but… Coming from the personal assistance sector, Carol initially decided to look following disabled and elderly people, within a family reception center. This structure brings together a host family and its residents in accommodation with a private area for the host, a common living room and individual rooms. Then she opened the doors of her own home and embarked full-time on the profession of welcoming which she considers “a gift of self”. Unfortunately, today, Carol’s common room is empty. The Buxerolloise stops her activity and points out what remains to be improved. “It’s really different from fostering children. The latter are paid by the Department while we are self-employed,” she laments. Directly paid by families, senior care workers have a precarious job. “We start to be able to live off of three people and we have to find them ourselves. When one of them leaves, we have just enough left to pay the utilities. And we do not have the right to unemployment. » Like their colleagues, host families for seniors meet in support groups and benefit from training. However, the latter are too few in number, which forces professionals to “train on the job, according to the profile”. The system therefore remains to be improved from the point of view of professionals but remains an original and warm alternative to the traditional retirement home.
