Materialize introduces a personalized solution for patients requiring total temporomandibular joint (TMJ) arthroplasty. The implants, manuals and digital planning for the surgeon are offered as a whole by the Belgian AM company.
The Total Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) is the place where the skull and jawbone meet. This ensures that the jaw can open and close. In patients with serious complications, it may be necessary to replace the entire joint.
Digitized process from one source
Materialize’s TMJ system is based on a fully digital process, ensuring efficiency and accuracy based on the patient’s anatomy. Clinicians work together with Materialize’s experienced clinical engineers, who carry out the digital planning process in close collaboration with the surgeon. The entire solution comes from Materialize, making it compatible with the company’s fully personalized cranio-maxillofacial (CMF) solutions and expanding access to personalized treatments. Everything needed for the procedure is made and supplied by Materialize.
Clinical study
A clinical study of the first patients treated with Materialize’s solution shows that patients experience a clear improvement in quality of life due to the implant. In 97 percent of cases accurate placement of the implant was reported. Within the same clinical study, clinicians reported a 100 percent success rate for the TMJ system one year following surgery.
From virtual preoperative plan to the operating room
“Our TMJ Total Arthroplasty System offers a completely personalized solution. It enables the seamless transfer of the virtual preoperative surgical plan to the operating room, enabling the functional reconstruction of the temporomandibular joint,” says Maarten Zandbergen, Market Manager CMF at Materialize.
Workflow from CT scan to surgery
The digitized workflow starts with a patient’s CT scan and dental information. During an interactive online session, a clinical engineer from Materialize supports the attending physician in planning the operation and designing the devices. Once the planning and design of the device is completed, Materialize produces the personalized TMJ implant following which the surgeon is provided with implants and instruments for surgery.
The personalized TMJ Total Arthroplasty System from Materialise is currently available to surgeons in Europe, the United Kingdom and Brazil. Now that Materialize has recently opened the 3D printing factory in Michigan (USA), the implants for the American market are produced there to shorten delivery times.
