In just two years, Miami International Airport (MIA) will boast a new seven-level parking lot with state-of-the-art technology. Miami-Dade County authorities revealed that more than two thousand vehicles will be able to use the new space.
Just on Tuesday of this week, construction work on the new parking lot officially began. The county mayor herself, Daniella Levine-Cava, gave the green light to the project and celebrated the new investments in the facilities.
“We are growing at a historic level. (…) With this, in two years, we will have not only a new garage, but a total 10 thousand parking spaces“Levine-Cava confirmed. The relief will be substantial in airport parking. Spaces will be made available for 2,240 vehicles and 50 spots for electric cars.
Summer 2026 is the designated date
According to estimates, the new parking lot should be ready by the summer of 2026. It will be built in an area adjacent to the current Flamingo parking lot. It is planned to be a sustainable car park with international standards. In turn, it will reduce carbon levels and use lights that use less electricity.
Miami-Dade Commissioner Kevin Cabrera also addressed the issue. “We have a program of more than $7 billion dollars to ensure that our airport is the best airport in the world.”
The MIA is the second airport with the most passenger traffic in the entire country and one of the busiest in the world. It might even break the passenger volume record for the third consecutive year in 2024.
Meanwhile, Levine-Cava announced that by 2025 a hotel will be built within the Miami air terminal itself.
As part of the ambitious project, the repair of the MIA Skytrain began. It had been built 25 years ago and was out of service in September 2023.
