Former Barcelona player Dani Alves gets 4.5 years in prison for rape

The 40-year-old former FC Barcelona player is said to have committed the offense in the toilet of a nightclub.

150.000 euro

According to the court, there is sufficient evidence, apart from the testimony of the accuser, that the rape can be considered proven. The Brazilian will remain under supervision for five years following his release. He was also given a 9.5-year ban on contact with the victim. Alves must also pay damages of 150,000 euros.

Alves denied the charges in a Barcelona court at the beginning of this month. “If she wanted to leave, she might have left, she was under no obligation to be there,” Alves stated. He also denied hitting the woman and pulling her hair. “I am not a violent man,” said the former FC Barcelona defender.

Demand 9 years in prison

Alves was arrested by police in Barcelona in January last year and has been in custody awaiting trial ever since. The Spanish Public Prosecution Service had demanded a prison sentence of nine years and compensation of 150,000 euros.

Alves played 126 international matches for Brazil and was at the World Cup in Qatar at the end of 2022. After the affair broke out, the right back’s contract with the Mexican Pumas was terminated.
