Several changes to asylum policy were announced by the current Administration of United States President Joe Biden. The goal is none other than to toughen the processes for the thousands of migrants who ask for refuge every day in that country.
The strategy outlined is mainly aimed at raising standards in credible fear interviews. As is known, this is a determining factor when opting for political asylum.
Now everything depends on the approval of a budget to execute the proposed changes. If the necessary funds are not allocated for this, the White House will not be able to implement its initiatives.
Right now the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) deficit exceeds $500 million dollars. Hence, ICE is in constant check regarding its current and future operation.
Executive order on the table
The White House is currently evaluating how to implement the new restrictions on asylum policy. One option being considered is to introduce the modifications through an executive order. Another variant is to apply a federal regulation, although the latter may take months to be approved.
Meanwhile, ICE is preparing to prioritize recently arrived immigrants in deportation processes, applying the “last in, first out” policy. Remember that last January, Joe Biden stated that he was willing to close the border with Mexico immediately. That would be possible if Congress presents an agreement that is being negotiated between Democrats and Republicans to address the immigration crisis.
Official data reveal that in the two most recent years almost 533 thousand Cubans arrived in the United States. This means 4.8% of the 11.1 million inhabitants of the Island. This does not include entries with other types of visa for which there are no official figures available.
