A ten minute walk will save you the hassle of parking for the game on Friday

On Friday 23 February, two sports cross paths in Gigantium in Aalborg, as both Aalborg Handball and Aalborg Pirates play home games that evening. It might well trigger a fear that there will be parking chaos of the other world, but both Søren Ørgaard, manager of Gigantium, and Aalborg Handball’s director Jan Larsen are sure that it will all work out.

– We’ve tried it once before, and it actually went okay. Of course, it means something that we don’t play at the same time. We play at 18.30 and the Pirates play at 20.00, so when the Pirates’ match starts, our spectators are inside the hall and will soon be on their way out.

– So we avoid the spectators arriving at the same time, says Jan Larsen.

Both Jan Larsen and Søren Ørgaard encourage the spectators to arrive in good time, and then consider whether you can take the bus out to Gigantium instead of the car. There is a free bus to the arena when you have a ticket for the individual match or have a season ticket – you just have to bring the ticket or season ticket with you on the bus, then you have paid. And this applies to the spectators of both handball and ice hockey.

In addition, both managers advise that you can look for other parking spaces than just those outside the hall itself. Even if you don’t get to stop right at the entrance.

– The short of the long story is that it is obviously not optimal to play on the same day, we just have to acknowledge that. But it can be solved by people being patient, arriving in good time and using some of the alternative parking options that are at the university and elsewhere, and where you can walk into the hall in 10 minutes.

– I would encourage that, says Jan Larsen.

The last point regarding seeking out the alternative parking options immediately, perhaps applies especially to the spectators of the ice hockey match, as it is the handball spectators who arrive first. Then you also avoid having to lie down and circle around for 20 minutes to find the available space.

On Aalborg Handball’s website, there is a map where you can see the parking spaces in the area around the Gigantium that you can use instead of the spaces at the Gigantium itself.

Gigantium also has its own app where you can see the traffic situation around the hall and be directed to the best parking space. It can be downloaded for iOS here and for Android here – in case you’re reading along from a phone or tablet.
