EU approves new sanctions once morest Russia, Chinese companies blacklisted

The European Union approved the thirteenth round of sanctions once morest Russia on Wednesday. The sanctions will take effect on Saturday, the second anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, and for the first time target Chinese companies suspected of helping Russia obtain banned items.

The new sanctions put nearly 200 entities and individuals on a blacklist prohibited from traveling to or doing business in the EU, and their assets in the EU will be frozen. These individuals and entities are accused of helping Moscow obtain weapons or being involved in the abduction of Ukrainian children.
New sanctions focus on cracking down onavoidance behavior, and targeting companies around the world accused of supporting Russian military procurement, particularly the supply chain that manufactures drones.Most of these companies are from Russia and alsoIncluding three companies from mainland China and one company based in Hong Kong. Also on the blacklist are companies from Türkiye and North Korea.
In addition, the EU will extend sanctions currently targeting regarding 2,000 companies and individuals for six months.

EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Borrell said: “With this plan, we will take more actions once morest entities, defense and military sectors involved in circumventing (sanctions).”

The new sanctions do not extend restrictions on Russian aluminum as disagreements remain over the issue. The new sanctions also do not cover those accused of responsibility for the death of Navalny, Putin’s most prominent critic.
