Two Guatemalans were captured on a highway in Chiapas, Mexico and were accused of transporting two rifles and ammunition for the exclusive use of the armed forces of that country, the authorities of that country reported.
The compatriots were identified as Leopoldo “G” and Fidel “C”, who were detained by members of the Secretariat of National Defense (Sedena), on a dirt road that was located regarding 700 meters from the highway between Frontera Hidalgo and Ciudad Gentleman.
According to the information, the Guatemalans were detained when they were traveling in a pick-up truck that had a modification in the upper part of the cabin that consisted of a metal turret for defense where heavy-caliber firearms were placed.
When the Sedena personnel stopped the pick-up truck where the Guatemalans were going, they found two rifles, one 5.56 caliber and the other 7.62, two magazines and more than a thousand useful cartridges of different calibers. There were also two more boxes that each contained 20 cartridges.
The Mexican authorities mentioned that both the weapons and the ammunition lacked the corresponding permits, so the two captured were placed at the disposal of the Public Ministry (Attorney General’s Office of the State of Chiapas) and were then referred to the Specialized Judge.
The Mexican media report indicates that the two Guatemalans were linked to the process by the District Judge Specialized in the Accusatory Criminal System.
The compatriots face charges for violation of the Federal Firearms and Explosives Law.
Fight between drug traffickers
For several years, in the state of Chiapas, Mexico, a drug cartel war has been waged for control of the area.
In recent months the problem has worsened and violence has worsened, causing civilian deaths and forced displacement.
This is also reflected in the report “Chiapas, a disaster. Between criminal violence and the complicity of the State”, from the Fray Bartolomé de Las Casas human rights center (Frayba) based in the city of San Cristóbal de Las Casas, Chiapas.
The armed conflict occurs between members of the Sinaloa Cartel and the Jalisco New Generation Cartel who are fighting for control of that state, the poorest in Mexico.
