La SNCF changes the rules on the sly. To travel in compliance, you will now have to board inOui and Intercités trains with a maximum of two pieces of luggage measuring 70 by 90 by 50 centimeters, as noted Le Figaro. This category concerns suitcases, large backpacks, hiking bags and sports bags.

It is also possible to add labeled hand luggage measuring 40 by 30 by 15 centimeters: backpack, shopping bag or computer bag.

As for passengers who carry a “ special baggage” of 90 by 130 centimeters (stroller, folded scooter, wakeboard, musical instrument in labeled case, pair of skis in labeled cover or snowboard in labeled cover), they can only take one, in addition to ‘a handbag.

A fine of 50 euros

Previously, the SNCF simply stipulated “ that a passenger must be able to carry their luggage alone and store it themselves on the train”, an imprecise rule which led to abuse. An adaptation period is planned until September 15, 2024, date from which “ non-compliance with the baggage policy results in a fine of 50 euros,” indicates SNCF Voyageurs at Figaro.

Two large pieces of luggage and one piece of authorized hand luggage correspond to what it is already possible to carry yourself and in one go,” explains SNCF Voyageurs.

With this development, the company is modeling its TGV and Intercités trains on the Ouigo format, on which a ticket only allows one cabin baggage and one hand baggage. However, it is possible to travel with a maximum of two additional bags, for 5 euros online and 20 euros at the dock for each.
