Advertisements aimed at promoting certain medications are currently increasing in Quebec.
These include Ozempic, Rybelsus and Contrave.
Various pharmaceutical companies are leading an advertising offensive targeting patients; However, they are particularly restricted in what they can say, since direct advertising of drugs is prohibited in Canada.
Regardless, the advertising campaigns achieve their goal.
“It’s certain that we have an explosion of requests, I would say particularly for Ozempic and Contrave,” explains pharmacist-owner Aleck Brodeur.
The pharmacist is also concerned regarding the role of influencers in these various advertisements.
Influencer Kelly Osbourne, for example, was criticized last week following praising the merits of Ozempic in an interview.
“What is sometimes worrying is that influencers – I have seen some personally – talk regarding it at length… they are teaching, but it is not necessarily teaching that “a health professional would have done,” laments Mr. Brodeur.
Doctors have also seen consultations increase in their offices because of these advertisements.
“With each wave of advertising on a particular product or on a particular disease, people will be led, or inclined to consult more for that, and sometimes it is not always relevant,” explains Dr Benoit Heppell.
The College of Physicians of Quebec indicates that “weight loss medications must be used for medical and not cosmetic purposes.”
