What is passive vaping?
It is important to distinguish passive vaping and passive smoking, because the two terminologies imply very different consequences. Passive vaping is the act of being involuntarily exposed to the aerosol produced by electronic cigarettes, coming from a strongly heated substance, the e-liquid.
If this aerosol looks like smoke, it is not. This is why it is necessary to differentiate between passive vaping and passive smoking, since the latter exposes people to cigarette smoke.
Electronic cigarettes, like those found on the specialized site Nicovip, are used by a growing number of smokers as an alternative to tobacco, with the aim of quitting smoking. Deemed much less dangerous than tobacco by numerous scientific studies, including one from the Parliamentary Office in France, the exposure of non-smokers to their aerosol raises questions regarding its dangerousness.
The dangers of passive smoking
Smoking kills and being indirectly exposed to cigarette smoke also kills. According to WHO figures, 1.2 million people die prematurely due to passive smoking. Cigarette smoke involuntarily inhaled promotes the development of cancer, myocardial infarction as well as numerous complications in fetuses in the event of exposure to the smoke of a pregnant woman.
65,000 children die each year from exposure to cigarette smoke. In France, several thousand non-smokers lose their lives each year due to passive smoking.
Is passive vaping dangerous?
The electronic cigarette is a small device that strongly heats a product, called e-liquid, in order to transform it into an aerosol. This contains vegetable glycerin, propylene glycol or a vegetable alternative to propylene glycol (such as vegetol), as well as flavorings and, very often, nicotine.
The aerosol emitted by vaping dissipates quickly in the air, more than tobacco smoke. It does not contain tar or carbon monoxide, which makes it much less dangerous than cigarette smoke. It is also free from the majority, if not all, of the carcinogens found in tobacco.
However, the vapor exhaled by the vaper may contain nicotine and fine particles, including traces of heavy metals. This is why people who vape should be cautious around those who do not vape. This is especially true for pregnant women, who should not be exposed to passive vaping.
Even though it is less dangerous than passive smoking, passive vaping should be avoided. Smokers and vapers alike are prohibited from smoking and vaping in closed and covered public places.
