Polaschek against penalties for defaulting parents

“I don’t think punishments work,” said Polaschek at a press conference on Tuesday. “If parents are not interested in their children’s educational success, no administrative punishment will help.”

Wiederkehr had recently spoken out in favor of introducing punishments, such as those for truancy. According to his own statements, he has already submitted a corresponding proposal for a federal regulation to the ministry.

“I expected more”

The Vienna City Councilor for Education is surprised. “Putting our heads in the sand will not solve the problem we see,” said Wiederkehr in a response. If students are prone to violence, bullying or homophobia and their parents are not interested, there must ultimately be the possibility of punishment.

“I would have expected Education Minister Polaschek not to trivialize the problem, but rather for us to pull together across Austria to improve the situation in schools,” criticized Wiederkehr. He referred to the violence protection package that Vienna recently launched.

The possibility of mandatory discussions with parents – for example when suspending students – is provided for. Administrative penalties are only possible with a change in federal law, he pointed out.
