The NUC volleyball players surprisingly won the first leg of the CEV Cup semi-final once morest Lodz with a 3-1 win.
Neuchâtel UC impressed in the semi-final first leg of Europe’s second highest club competition. The Swiss champions surprisingly won away once morest Grot Budowlani Lodz 17:25, 25:21, 28:26, 25:22.
After a false start and losing the first set, NUC got better and better once morest the much better ranked Poles. In the second round, the Swiss team turned around a temporary 6-point deficit. The Neuchâtel women secured the hard-fought third set following fending off a set point at 25:26.
Led by the strong Americans Tia Scambray and Madeline Haynes, who each scored 23 points, NUC kept its nerve in the fourth round and took advantage of the second match point following 74 minutes.
Two sentences are missing from the coup
The hopes of the team led by coach Lauren Bertolacci of reaching the final have grown further. In the second leg next Tuesday (from 6:50 p.m. in the commented SRF live stream), the Neuchâtel women want to be the first team since Zeiler Köniz 21 years ago to reach the final in front of their home crowd and thus complete the coup. In the Riveraine sports hall, two winning sets would be enough.
