The Italian Margherita Vicario refreshes the Berlinale with a pop Cinderella fable

Berlin, Feb 21 (EFE).- The Italian singer-songwriter Margherita Vicario has brought a breath of fresh air to the Berlinale with her directorial debut, ‘Gloria!’, a period fable with a pop spirit that appeals to the female creative insurrection and sorority, and who fights for the Golden Bear.

The story takes place in the year 1800, in a religious musical institution for orphan girls on the outskirts of Venice. There are nerves regarding an imminent visit by the Pope, the director of the center has taken on the task of premiering a new composition for the occasion, but he is dry of ideas.

In parallel, Teresa (Gallatea Bellugi), a lonely maid whom everyone believes to be mute, gifted with a secret natural talent for music, discovers a pianoforte in the basement and begins to experiment with it, when she is discovered by the residents.

Vicario, who has two power pop albums released (‘Minimal Musical’, from 2014 and ‘Bingo’, from 2021), had explored the performative and cinematographic elements of music in his video clips.

In the interviews she gave there was always a recurring question regarding the situation of women in the music industry and that led her to investigate and discover that institutions existed like those reflected in her film, she explained this Wednesday at a press conference.

Places where orphan girls lived with daughters of aristocrats abandoned by their families and all of them jointly received musical education.

Vicario mentioned the case of Vivaldi, who trained some of the greatest violin virtuosos of the time at the Ospedalle de la Pietá in Venice, but insisted that this is not a historical film but a fable regarding female creativity and therefore This has allowed the introduction of pop music – composed by herself – in the midst of classicism.

“There have always been women making music, but their social status was ambiguous, being accepted as a female artist was complicated and many times entering institutions like these was the only way to continue dedicating themselves to it,” said the filmmaker.

With echoes of Sophia Coppola’s cinema, ‘Gloria!’ It combines lightness, humor and entertainment with the drama of a group of locked-up girls, with different pasts, but the same desire to get out of their confinement and submission.

The script was co-written by Vicario and the writer and director Anita Rivaroli, who has participated in series such as ‘SKAM Italia’.
