The Government, through the Minister of the Interior, Carolina Tohá, and her Justice counterpart, Luis Cordero, promulgated this Thursday the constitutional reform that creates the Supraterritorial Prosecutor’s Office.
This is a new unit specialized in organized crime and highly complex crimes, within the Public Ministry.
The instance will carry out its functions with respect to crimes in which there is a history of the intervention of criminal or criminal associations, and when the facts require a supraterritorial or transnational direction of the investigation.
The initiative is part of the “fast track” of 31 public security projects prioritized by agreement of the Government of Gabriel Boric and Parliament: it was promoted by the national prosecutor, Ángel Valencia; It was also included in the proposal for a new Constitution rejected in the plebiscite of December 17, and was sent out of Congress on December 21 through projects presented by the Ministry of Justice and by senators from National Renewal that were merged.
This is the most profound modification to the internal organization of the Public Ministry since its creation (1997), the Executive highlighted.
