It is not news that the health and well-being resources of Apple Watch have been saving several people. Last year, for example, a mother and daughter were saved by the watch’s heart rate alert, as was a Brazilian’s grandfather. Now, we have another case of discovering heart problems with the device.
The American Frank Haggerty, a 73-year-old retired accountant from Lawrenceville (New Jersey) started using an Apple Watch SE just to look cooler and more modern. One day, however, while he and his wife were sleeping, the man received a notification on his watch stating that his heart rate was very low, just 30 beats per minute (when normal is 60 to 100).
Then, as reported to CBS News Philadelphia, he quickly went by ambulance to a hospital. There, the emergency room doctor was shocked that Haggerty had no symptoms such as vertigo or chest pain; the man, in turn, felt he “might run a marathon”, which the doctor disagreed with.
The elderly man was discovered to have a condition called complete heart block. This is a phenomenon in the heart characterized by a malfunction in the transmission of electrical signals, something like a decoupling between the chambers of the heart, which can cause changes in the heart rhythm. Therefore, he had to undergo a procedure to implant a pacemaker, which helps regulate his heartbeat.
The doctor stated that the Apple Watch is quite reliable for situations like his patient’s, although it has some bugs that need to be fixed. Haggerty, for his part, is back to exercising and is very grateful to the device: “If I wasn’t wearing the watch, I wouldn’t be sitting here today,” he said, adding that the device is his “best friend.”
To activate heart rate alerts, simply go to the Watch app on the iPhone paired with the watch and choose the “Heart” menu in the “My Watch” tab. Then, tap “High Beats” or “Low Beats” and select a BPM value. The feature works on all Watch models, except the first generation and with children (under 13 years old).
