In addition to social injustice, the Austrian Professors’ Union (ÖPU) and the Christian Trade Unionists (FCG) also cited the possible uses of artificial intelligence (AI) as a reason for this in a press release. Instead, the VWA should only be written voluntarily or can be replaced by an additional exam that can be chosen. The two organizations are the strongest factions in the staff representation and the AHS teachers’ union. FCG/AHS chairman Herbert Weiß is also chairman of the AHS teachers’ union.
The Matura at the AHS is currently based on three pillars: Students have to complete three or four written exams or, depending on the number of written subjects chosen, two or three oral exams and write and present a VWA.
VWA is intended to prepare students for universities
The VWA is not tied to any subject and is intended to prepare students for university – for example, by learning how to formulate questions regarding content, research, work with sources and secondary literature, apply citation rules and present content. The topic is determined in agreement with the supervising teacher in the first semester of the seventh grade. The work must then be submitted at the end of the first week of classes in the second semester of the eighth grade and later presented orally. From the outset, it is planned for the student to document the work steps and for the teachers to keep a “supervision log”.
However, the possible use of AI requires even more intensive support, “which overloads teachers in addition to teaching, especially in times of a teacher shortage,” argue ÖPU chairwoman Eva Teimel and FCG/AHS chairwoman Weiß. In addition, the VWA is the “most socially unjust pillar” of the Matura – young people from households with less education can count on less support.
