José Contreras reacts to Monterrey’s 7-1 defeat to Comunicaciones in the Concacaf Champions Cup

The first round of the Concacaf Champions Cup was a nightmare for Comunicaciones.
The white team, the only representative of Guatemalan soccer in the most important tournament in the region, fell by an aggregate score of 7 goals to 1 once morest the Mexican Monterrey and said goodbye to international competition for this semester of 2024.
Iván Franco Sopegno’s team, which is second in the Clausura 2024, did not have the tie that its fans expected and was eliminated by a Monterrey team that was vastly superior in the 180 minutes of football played.
José Manuel Contreras, captain of Communications, attended the Concacaf microphones following the duel played on the night of Thursday, February 15 at the BBVA stadium in Monterrey and expressed his feelings following being left out of the competition.
Contreras expressed that in the second leg Comunicaciones began conditioned, due to the adverse score in the first leg.
“From the first game it was complicated, a very tough advantage“he commented.”The intention was to come and compete but unfortunately it was not enough for us.“he continued.
Although he regretted the result and how his elimination was staged, the cream captain knows that Communications must now focus on the local tournament.
“Now to get fully into the national tournament, the more participations we have we will continue to grow, we are not happy with what this series was, we have to keep our heads up and keep learning“he concluded.
After the elimination of the Concacaf Champions Cup, Comunicaciones will have to wait until the second half of 2024 to return to international tournaments.
Its next challenge at the Concacaf level will be the 2024 Central American Cup, a tournament for which it has already qualified and is for now the only Guatemalan team with a ticket, since Clausura 2024 needs to end to meet the other two national teams that will accompany it.
