ICE would release thousands of migrants and stop detentions in the United States 2024-02-18 00:10:55

A deficit in budget funds would cause the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency (ICE) to take several key measures. Here we tell you what it is regarding.

The Office might release thousands of migrants from their detention centers. Another estimated action would be to suspend mass arrests of those who cross the border illegally. Finally, deportation flights to several nations would be stopped.

For ICE to continue carrying out its daily tasks with the current workload and pending cases, it requires at least $700 million dollars. According to The Washington Post, a reform is being contemplated to reduce beds from 38,000 to 22,000 in the Agency’s detention centers.

Border Security Challenge

The current scenario imposes a direct challenge for border security. In addition, it becomes a critical point for Joe Biden’s administration just when the number of undocumented immigrants crossing the country’s borders on a daily basis is estimated to grow.

However, this serious scenario might be reversed, although for now it is only a possibility. ICE hopes that financial resources will be reallocated from other agencies belonging to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) itself. In any case, this variant would have negative implications at the country level.

Just in fiscal year 2023, the United States experienced a record in the interception of irregular aliens on its southwest border. Then, 2.4 million encounters were exceeded.

This increase was especially reflected in September, the month with the most interceptions. During that period, Venezuelan migrants were the most intercepted, followed by Mexicans and Haitians. It is estimated that the migration crisis will worsen as the current year 2024 progresses.

Finally, immigration activists and migrant rights advocates welcomed the defeat of the now famous bill.
