According to a statement from the Israeli army, the operation is precise and limited, targeting Hamas terrorists hiding in it. The Israelis also believe that inside the hospital there are bodies of hostages.
The operation comes a day following the Israeli army ordered thousands of Palestinians who have sought refuge in the hospital to leave.
Earlier doctors in southern Gaza claimed that Israeli snipers shot several people as they tried to leave the Nasser Medical Complex in recent days.
The hospital in the southern city of Khan Younis is the largest remaining functioning medical facility in Gaza, but for weeks it has been at the center of an ongoing Israeli military offensive in the area.
A trauma surgeon at the hospital told CNNi that he saw at least two people killed by snipers on Tuesday (13/2), while others were shot and wounded.
The Israeli army ordered hospital staff, patients and hundreds of displaced people sheltering inside the medical compound to evacuate the site and said it had “opened a safe route” for civilians to leave.
But at least eight people trying to escape along the route came under fire on Tuesday, said the surgeon, who asked not to be named for security reasons.
Among the injured, according to the surgeon, was a 16-year-old boy who was shot with four bullets at the hospital gate.
