Salary increase for half a million Danes: That’s how much they get

Updated: Employers and employees in the municipalities agree on a collective agreement with a salary framework of 8.8 percent over the next two years. We brought a live blog from the last hours of the negotiations and following the result was clear. You will find it at the bottom of the article:

A new collective agreement for around half a million employees fell into place on Saturday.

Thus, employers and employees in municipalities have agreed on a collective agreement with a total salary framework of 8.8 percent over the next two years.

This will be announced by the parties following the negotiations.

Among other things, the parties have agreed on a quick payout, with four percent being paid out from 1 April 2024 – and later that year a regulation.

– We have reached a financially responsible settlement, it is important for the municipalities, says Michael Ziegler, who is chairman of KL’s Salary and Personnel Committee.

In the municipal area, daycare centers, schools and care for the elderly are operated, among other things. There are around 500,000 employees in the country’s municipalities.

Mona Striib is chairman of the trade unions in the Bargaining Community and has negotiated on behalf of the employees.

She had hoped for a double-digit salary increase, but instead it turned out to be a tight salary frame compared to expectations.

It also contains measures such as more maternity leave for fathers or co-mothers, money for the lowest paid and a freedom savings account where it is possible to save paid freedom for later use.

But she had hoped for more.

– The comma is in the wrong place, but the situation was different. We cannot avoid the concrete wall where the private and public labor market must be monitored.

– The compensation is the new wage index that comes into force from 2025. We can catch up if the private sector picks up a bit once more, which we hope they do, says Mona Striib.

The agreement states that employees can save days off for later use. The individual can save up to 15 days together, which can be settled as desired.

– One of the things that comes into this settlement as an innovation is this savings model, where extra or overtime work that is not time off can go into an account together with the sixth week of vacation, says Ziegler.

Both he and Mona Striib emphasize that there is a guaranteed two percent available to negotiate wages at workplaces.

With the collective agreement, the father or co-mother can get three weeks of extra maternity pay.

In addition, the parties have agreed that more employees will be on time or full time.

The parties have been negotiating since December and began the final negotiations on Tuesday. In total, they have negotiated for over 100 hours since Tuesday.

Last week, the collective agreement for 190,000 state employees fell into place. They got an increase in the salary frame of 8.8 percent over two years.

It usually sets out the framework for the many thousands of municipal and regional employees. There are around 150,000 employees in the regions, and their agreement is expected to follow that of the municipalities.

8.8 percent was what the state played with. On the other hand, the civil servants’ negotiators had launched a demand for a double-digit salary increase.
