In her in the specialist magazine Foods published Study Researchers at the University of Newcastle investigated the effects of carrot consumption on the risk of cancer. Other scientific studies have already shown that the beta-carotene contained in the vegetables, a precursor to vitamin A, can protect cells in the body. It was therefore suspected that this provitamin might also reduce the risk of cancer. Since scientists have not yet been able to detect a major effect in clinical studies, the research team from Newcastle examined other ingredients, such as the two plant substances polyacetylene and isocoumarins, which are mainly found in carrots. Both plant substances are said to have an anti-inflammatory effect. The polyacetylene falcarinol in particular is said to have a tumor-inhibiting effect. In animal and cell experiments, the plant substance showed anti-cancer potential.

The researchers analyzed 198 international studies for their study. The results showed that in 80 studies with over 60,000 participants, regular consumption of carrots reduced the risk of cancer by up to 20 percent. The effect for different types of cancer hardly differed. The scientists also found that people who ate five servings of carrots per week (one serving is roughly a handful of sliced raw carrots) benefited most from the protective effect. But even just one serving per week might reduce the risk by four percent.

According to the researchers, eating carrots is “clearly associated with a reduced risk of cancer.” However, of course this cannot alone be a cure for cancer. Cancer prevention includes, among other things, several factors that affect your own lifestyle and can therefore be influenced to a certain extent. These include, for example, a balanced diet with lots of fresh foods (vegetables, fruit, whole grain products, legumes, healthy fats), regular exercise and avoiding cigarettes and alcohol.
